For the first time, NHS England has published data that measures waits of more than 12 hours from arrival at A&E, as overall waiting lists have climbed to a new record high. The government target for A&E is 4 hours, not 12 hours, and 95% of patients are meant to achieve that.
But on average, 1 in 10 people arriving at major A&E departments in England, are waiting more than 12 hours before being admitted, transferred or discharged, new figures show.
At some NHS trusts the figure is close to one in five, while at two trusts – East Kent and Barking, Havering & Redbridge – the proportion is higher than one in four.
