How many skilled health professionals in the UK (and your country?)
According to the latest WHO data, in the UK, there are 113 skilled health professionals per 10,000 people – doctors, nurses and other. This equates to about 1 in 100 of the population.
But this number is no where near the number of all health professionals; as it does not include carers, support workers, receptionists, clerks, porters, cleaners etc.
Interestingly, the USA has a similar number (117 per 10,000 people) of skilled health professionals, even though it has a very different healthcare system.
Both numbers are on the average for developed countries.
Other developed countries with better healthcare systems than the NHS have significantly more (Norway 222) or less (Spain 92 and Israel 86). So it is complicated. Performance in healthcare is not just based on numbers of staff. Its what they do, and how they do it. And the UK is wedded to traditional work practices, eg hospitals working 4.5 days a week.
You can look at the WHO data on numbers of skilled health professionals and see how your country compares.
