The secret of happiness as a health professional – and possibly life in general – is quite simple:
Focus on the problems of the patients and not your own.
How can you get them going again?
That’s it. In the hurly burly of life as a doctor/nurse/AHP/manager/whatever, it is easy to focus on your own problems:
- Row with the wife, husband or partner
- Sore throat, spot on your face or a painful knee
- Cost of your uni fees or mortgage
- Exams ahead, e-portfolio or appraisal
- Why the NHS never works perfectly (yes, we all think that every day!)
So, don’t. Focus on the problems of your patients every day, primarily to help them of course. But in doing so, you also will feel better about yourself, because you have helped them. And at the same time you will have gained valuable experience. And that will make you an even better health professional tomorrow. And that will make you happy. Job done.
Oh yes. Top Tip. And always finish the day with a hot bath.
