A normal TSH level

Normal TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) blood level

A normal TSH is 0.5 – 5.0 mU/L.

TSH is the most important thyroid test. But it has to be interpreted with other thyroid tests including thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroid antibodies.

Explanation

  • High or low TSH levels can indicate a thyroid problem
  • What do abnormal TSH levels mean?
    • A low TSH indicates an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)
    • A high TSH indicates an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism).

Note. TSH levels can vary depending on the laboratory that tested the sample; and other factors, including age, gender, medication and pregnancy.
