Appropriate use of A&E – what not to go there for
These are examples of illnesses, where A&E is not appropriate or likely to be useful:
- Flu-like illnesses, coughs, colds, mild COVID-19, earache and sore throats
- Backpain (unless severe and new)
- Minor breathlessness or wheezing
- Abdominal pain (unless extreme or associated with collapse)
- Urinary difficulties (unless completely unable to pass water)
- Vaginal bleeding (unless very heavy and associated with faintness)
- Minor rashes
- Diarrhoea and vomiting for less than 48h
- Simple bites and stings
- Social problems
- Emergency contraception
- Dental problems (except major trauma).
Such conditions can generally be safely managed by a GP, Practice Nurse, Pharmacist, Dentist .. and sometimes by the individual themselves.
