Can I use NHS app to get an e-Consult with my GP – i.e. is online consultation available within the NHS app?

Yes. Well, for some GP practices.

An online consultation (‘eConsult’) is a modern and effective way to contact your own NHS GP practice online .. for free, anywhere and anytime you have access to the internet. You can use your smartphone, tablet or computer to have an online consultation.

Online consultations are where you message a GP by completing an online webform. You will be asked various questions, and have the chance to upload photographs where appropriate.

You can access this system in two ways:

  1. Through your GPs website (and via the NHS app) – and get a response from one of your GPs. Not all GP surgeries offer this service. Check with their website first
  2. Directly through the NHS app – and get a response from another GP they have appointed. They may not have full access to your records.

These are not for any urgent advice and can take 1-2 days to get a response; and they will only be monitored during normal working hours. They are useful for routine queries. You are normally messaged back via a secure portal. It is not designed for ongoing conversations, i.e. one email leads to one response.

The uses of this service depends on whether you are asking for advice from your GP or the NHS App appointed GP. But some examples could be:

  • Requesting a prescription
  • Asking for a blood test
  • Requesting a sick note
  • Requesting advice on a new skin condition or hip pain
  • Updating your GP about care (e.g. new medication or a scan) you have had elsewhere.

Yes you can use NHS app to get an e-Consult with your GP – i.e. is online consultation is available within the NHS app. Why not try it? It may really help.
