What is normal human temperature?

The average normal human body temperature is 37°C (range 36.5-37.3°C), measured orally. But it varies depending on how (and when) you take it, e.g.

  • Rectal – about 0.27° to 0.38°C greater than oral temperature
  • Axillary – about 0.55°C (less than the oral temperature.

Body temperature can also vary throughout the day, with the lowest temperature usually around 4am and the highest around 6pm.

It can also change depending on environmental conditions, such as increasing when we exercise and decreasing at night.

A temperature over 38°C is usually a sign of a fever caused by infection.

A body temperature below 35°C is called hypothermia and can be serious if not treated quickly.
