What to do if you have side effects from mental health medication?

Side effects from medication for depression, anxiety disorders and psychosis can be common in the first few weeks of taking them but usually improve quite quickly. Occasionally side effects can be more severe.

You can get fast, professional advice by visiting your local pharmacist, especially regarding side effects. Many GP surgeries also employ mental health workers who can give you advice on your medication.

It is important not to stop medications suddenly, without the advice of a professional as this could lead to withdrawal symptoms or a deterioration in your mental health.

Support and treatment is available for a number of side effects associated with certain medications. A member of your team will be happy to discuss these and create a plan that suits you.

Just call your GP surgery or Care Co-ordinator and ask if there is a mental health worker you can talk to.
