When should I see a doctor about an insect bite?

For most simple insect bites, you do not need to see a doctor.

But. You should see a doctor about an insect bite if you experience any of the following symptoms:

Infection

You have pus, increasing pain, swelling, or redness around the bite. You may also have red streaks leading from the bite, or a fever.

Allergic reaction

You have a rash, hives, itching, or swelling away from the bite. You may also have mild belly pain or nausea.

Other symptoms

You have a large area of swelling around the bite, such as your entire arm or leg. You have symptoms that don’t improve within a few days. You were bitten in your mouth, throat, or near your eyes. You have joint pain, swelling, and a rash several hours after the bite.

You should call emergency services if you experience wheezing, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea after a bite
