Why you shouldn’t stop antidepressants suddenly

Up to 20% of the UK population take antidepressant medications. These include sertraline, fluoxetine, citalopram and duloxetine.

They are all powerful and effective drugs, but it’s really important that you don’t stop taking them suddenly. The dose should be reduced very gradually to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

It is safe to take antidepressants long term. If you are having side effects or simply want to stop or reduce your dosage it is important to discuss with your GP or Mental Health team first.

They will be able to work with you to create a plan that is tailored to you to prevent deteriorations in your mental health and avoid unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
